The diaphragm

The diaphragm is a big, thin dome-shaped muscle, which separates the thoracic cavity
(lungs and heart) from the abdominal cavity (intestines, stomach, liver, etc.).
It is the central muscle in respiration, drawing the lungs and heart downward on inhalation,
and pushing them upward in exhalation.
